Dr. Colby Oitment is an adult and adolescent/pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon practicing at Scarborough General Hospital and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, earning a degree in Neurosciences and Chemical/Physical Sciences before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland. He then returned to Canada for his orthopedic surgery residency at McMaster University.
To further specialize, Dr. Oitment pursued advanced training in complex adult spine surgery and scoliosis surgery at the University of Toronto, followed by a clinical scholarship at McMaster University, where he also completed a Master’s degree in Health Research Methodology and Epidemiology.
An award-winning educator, Dr. Oitment was recognized with the Unsung Hero Award at McMaster University for his commitment to resident education. He plays an active role in weekly educational rounds with residents from multiple universities, fostering both knowledge and interest in spinal surgery.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Oitment has published numerous high-impact studies and has presented his work internationally. His research focuses on resident education, surgical complication management, and risk mitigation in complex spinal reconstructions. He also contributes to academic scholarship as an editor and reviewer for leading journals, including the Global Spine Journal and The Spine Journal.
